“After playing tennis and football for many years, I had decided to take up a bit of boxing and Sarah-Jane of Unorthobox had provided a perfect opportunity to do so at Heaton Tennis & Squash Club, the club I have played tennis for and been a team captain for the last 11-12 years. ”
Having always been inspired by watching the big fights, watching the legendary Rocky movies over the years and also preparing for
my tennis matches by listening to Rocky soundtracks, Unorthobox provided the perfect opportunity at my local tennis club for weekly Mixed Ability non-contact boxing sessions which I jumped at the chance to do.
Unorthobox provides a perfect opportunity for people with severe disabilities and health conditions etc to get involved in sport regardless of health condition or ability.
I have always said that boxing ain’t just a sport which just goes around throwing punches and hurting your opponents, I believe it is much more than that, I believe it’s not just a great sport but also a sport which requires fitness, technique, footwork, discipline and so much more. Going to these Mixed Ability sessions has all pretty much confirmed that for me and is a very good work out too.
In the 3-4 months I have been going to these Mixed Ability boxing sessions, I have learnt how to punch with great technique, punching with various combos with confidence, various defensive movements, moving around with the correct footwork and various other things. I have also learnt in terms of technique and footwork, boxing can draw comparisons with tennis which I always play and may have also improved certain aspects of my tennis.
The Unorthobox Mixed Ability sessions don’t just teach how to box but also provide a great workout and fitness in a fun environment.
It’s been a real privilege to be taught by Sarah and the other boxing coaches and tutors. They have taught me to box with real confidence and made it a real fun environment to be involved in, showing plenty of compassion towards me living with Crohns Disease and living with an ileostomy pouch.
Irrespective of what disability or health condition anyone may have, I believe these Mixed Ability boxing sessions are the right place to come. They not only teach you how to box, but you also have a great workout, have fun and pretty much can cater for anyone with (or without) any disability and health condition.
